Lahaul-Spiti, July 23, 2025: National Highway-3 (NH-3), popularly known as the Manali-Leh Highway, which connects Himachal Pradesh’s tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti to Manali, is once again facing severe challenges this monsoon season. This crucial lifeline of the valley is continuously being disrupted by incidents of landslides, flash floods, and rockfalls from the hills, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Significance of the Highway:
This highway is not merely a road; it is the lifeline for the residents of Lahaul and Spiti valley, connecting the region to the outside world, especially to Manali and Kullu valley. It is vital for supplies, tourism, and emergency services, with the entire functioning of the region depending on its uninterrupted connectivity.
Current Situation and Major Obstructions:
As of today, July 23, 2025, minor obstructions have been observed in certain sections of NH-3, causing slow-moving traffic. These blockades are typically a result of heavy rainfall overnight or debris falling from the hills in the morning. While these are not major blockages, they slow down traffic and cause inconvenience to commuters.
Problematic Nullahs (Streams/Drains):
Some locations on NH-3 are particularly vulnerable during the monsoon and frequently experience blockades. Two prominent such spots are:
- Pagla Nala: This is a point along the Manali-Leh route where water and debris consistently flow down from the hillside. Even moderate rainfall can turn it into a raging stream, depositing mud and rocks onto the road.
- Teling Nala: Another notorious spot on the Manali-Leh Highway where landslides and water flow frequently disrupt the road.
Teams from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) maintain constant vigilance at both these nullahs.
Crucial Role of BRO:
The BRO plays a pivotal role in keeping this highway open. Their teams are on 24×7 alert, stationed with heavy machinery (like JCBs, bulldozers). As soon as an obstruction occurs, BRO personnel immediately begin work to clear it and restore the road for traffic. Their swift response ensures that Lahaul valley’s connectivity is maintained.

These continuous disruptions are directly impacting local residents and tourists. Commuters often face hours of waiting on the roads, disrupting travel plans. From a safety perspective, it’s a concern as passing through landslide-prone areas can be risky, especially in adverse weather. The tourism industry is also bearing the brunt, as tourists tend to postpone trips due to bad weather and uncertainty.
Administration’s Advisory:
The district administration has advised all travelers, particularly tourists, to avoid unnecessary travel and to check the latest road status with the BRO or local police before commencing their journey. A specific warning has been issued against traveling during nighttime.
