Lahaul-Spiti, July 23, 2025: The monsoon’s fury continues to grip Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti district, directly impacting its major tourist attractions. In this regard, all routes leading to Lahaul’s famous Chandratal Lake (Moon Lake) have been closed indefinitely due to heavy rainfall and landslides. The administration has issued a strict advisory, urging tourists not to venture into these high-risk areas.
Significance of Chandratal:
Situated at an altitude of approximately 14,100 feet above sea level, Chandratal Lake is renowned for its mesmerizing beauty, crystal-clear waters, and serene environment. It’s a dream destination for trekkers and nature lovers, and a primary attraction for tourism in Lahaul-Spiti. Under normal weather conditions, tourists reach here after a challenging drive via Kunzum Pass or the Manali-Leh Highway.
Reasons for Route Closure:
Continuous torrential rains have rendered the routes leading to Chandratal extremely perilous:
- Landslides: Several major landslides have occurred on the kuccha (unpaved) and narrow roads leading to the lake, bringing massive rocks and debris onto the pathways.
- Flash Floods: Sudden surges of water in mountain streams (nalas) have caused roads to be washed away or severely damaged in multiple locations.
- Treacherous Trails: The surrounding trekking trails have also become excessively slippery and hazardous, making even walking unsafe.
- Kunzum Pass Route: The route to Chandratal via Kunzum Pass, which is often closed due to snowfall in early and late seasons, is now blocked by debris and flowing water due to the monsoon.
Strict Warning for Tourists:
The Lahaul and Spiti district administration has issued clear directives that no tourist should risk their life by venturing towards Chandratal or its surrounding areas. Police and Home Guard personnel are deployed at sensitive check-posts to ensure that no one proceeds on these closed routes. The administration appeals for cooperation from tourists to avoid being stranded or facing any untoward incidents.
Impact on Tourism Industry:
The closure of the Chandratal route is causing significant losses to local tourism businesses, including homestay owners, guides, and taxi operators. This monsoon season has already been challenging for them, and the closure of key attractions is further exacerbating the financial crisis.
Current Status and Future Outlook:
Given the prevailing weather conditions, there is no immediate possibility of the Chandratal Lake routes reopening soon. Until the weather improves and teams from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Public Works Department (PWD) completely restore the roads, the area will remain closed to tourists. The administration urges everyone to be patient and prioritize their safety.
