Lahaul-Spiti/Kullu, July 23, 2025: Amidst the ongoing heavy monsoon in Himachal Pradesh, the strategically and touristically important Atal Tunnel (Rohtang) remains open for vehicular traffic. This tunnel continues to be a lifeline for the Lahaul Valley, but continuous strict monitoring is being maintained by the administration and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on the road conditions at both ends of the tunnel (Manali and Lahaul sides). Traffic may be halted at any time if there is an unpredictable change in weather conditions or if a dangerous situation develops on the road.
Atal Tunnel: An All-Weather Lifeline:
This 9.02-kilometer-long state-of-the-art tunnel provides a safe and year-round alternative to the Rohtang Pass. It has significantly reduced travel time between Manali and Lahaul-Spiti and keeps the valley connected to the rest of the country even during winters. It is a major convenience not only for locals, military personnel, and traders but also for tourists.
Current Operational Status and Challenges:
As of today, July 23, 2025, normal vehicular movement continues through the Atal Tunnel. However, several challenges arise on the tunnel’s approach roads during the monsoon season:
- Landslides and Rockfalls: There is a constant risk of landslides and rockfalls from the hills due to heavy rainfall on the southern portal (towards Manali, near Dhundi and Solang Nala) and the northern portal (towards Lahaul, near Sissu) of the tunnel.
- Water and Debris on Road: Continuous rain leads to waterlogging on roads and debris flowing down from the mountains, increasing slipperiness and making driving risky.
- Reduced Visibility: Heavy rain and clouds can reduce visibility in some areas, especially during the night.
Strict Monitoring by Administration and BRO:
- The Atal Tunnel management and BRO teams are working round the clock to tackle these challenges.
- Road conditions are continuously monitored, and teams are stationed at vulnerable locations.
- Heavy machinery (like JCBs etc.) is kept ready to clear any obstructions immediately.
- Police and administrative officials are deployed at the tunnel’s entry points to regulate vehicular movement based on weather information.
Advisory for Travelers and Traffic Restrictions:
- Information Before Travel: Travelers are advised to obtain information about the latest status of the Atal Tunnel from the Kullu or Lahaul-Spiti police control room before commencing their journey.
- Avoid Unnecessary Travel: Avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather.
- Avoid Night Travel: Avoid traveling through the tunnel at night, as it can be difficult to assess road conditions and dangers in the dark.
- Safe Driving: Drive slowly and cautiously both inside and outside the tunnel.
Future Uncertainty:
Monsoon conditions are unpredictable. If a major threat arises on the tunnel’s approach roads due to heavy rainfall or landslides, traffic can be halted at any time to ensure the safety of passengers.
Currently, the Atal Tunnel remains a crucial link between Lahaul-Spiti and the rest of Himachal, but monsoon challenges persist.
